Carol Leubering had been married more than 50 years when she wrote this little book. Her own marital journey with Jack informs its pages, as do the journeys of other couples whose stories she shares.
The people Leubering introduces walk out of the Bible and contemporary life, from Adam and Eve who fell in love at first sight, to spouses welcoming children and grandchildren or searching for reconciliation, to the author’s parents’ final goodbye. None of these people are fixed on pedestals.
Real people traverse all the book’s six chapters, spanning the life cycle of a marriage. These people encourage the reader to see God as a companion on the road through marriage, a road destined to end in the heart of God.
Each chapter begins with a short Scripture passage and concludes with reflection questions that invite the reader to look back over his or her own marriage map to see where God has been discovered–or overlooked.
The book could be read quickly and alone, or it could be savored as an eight-day couple “retreat” by using the Bible passages to inspire prayer and the reflection questions to stimulate journaling and couple dialogue.
