In November, 2009, the U.S. Catholic Bishops approved a pastoral letter entitled “Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan.” The letter is addressed to a broad audience, including young adults who are thinking about marriage, married couples, and those who work or volunteer in various kinds of marriage ministries.
The letter is the centerpiece of the National Pastoral Initiative for Marriage, a Bishops’ effort that began five years ago to promote, strengthen and protect marriage. The letter looks at marriage as both a natural and supernatural gift from God. It is the theological foundation for the Bishops’ efforts to promote healthy marriages and to protect marriage against attempts to redefine it.
