Learning To Say I Do

The Countdown Continues

June 23, 2011

Sara: As the countdown continues, I’m excited, anxious, nervous, and a bit sad all at the same time. I’m excited to be marrying Justin – to share our lives together, and become one in a way not possible before marriage. I’m anxious – and can’t wait for the day to be HERE. At one point, I laughed at myself today as I started to try to calculate how many hours before we are married.

And I’m nervous – not that we SHOULDN’T marry, but that things might not go as we had hoped. In the back of my mind, I’m beginning to more fully realize we’re pledging before God, our family, and our friends that we will love each other and be true to each other forever – no matter what. Since this is a promise only God can help us keep, it’s quite daunting!

Finally, this week especially I’ve celebrated a lot of lasts before I become Mrs. Justin. My relationships with my family, friends, and colleagues are going to change radically – even more than just we are now “engaged.” My great-aunt had me over for dinner last night, and I realized that because of the distance between Justin’s and my apartment and her house, I won’t be seeing her on a weekly basis anymore, as we have done for the past three years. Life will sure be different!

I remember a wedding Justin and I went to nearly three years ago for Justin’s best man, Ned. Ned was marrying Laura. I hadn’t met either of them before the wedding, and Laura looked very nervous as she started down the aisle. So nervous, I wondered if she would make it down the aisle. In a split second, her face changed into a glow. She had seen her beloved at the end of the aisle, and that made it all worthwhile. I pray, throughout the stresses, the headaches, and the items that will inevitably go wrong, Justin and I can keep our eye on the prize – each other.

Justin and I are very blessed to have numerous family, friends, and colleagues join us for our wedding on Saturday. Many more are unable to physically be in attendance, but I know we’ll be in their thoughts and prayers. We’re very happy to have several priests join us, including our main celebrant, Justin’s good friend Fr. Matthew Rolling. Fr. Rolling was just ordained a priest a little over a year ago, and has known Justin since being in Justin’s FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) bible study. Perhaps Fr. Rolling will insert into the homily a story or two about Justin I haven’t heard yet.

My main hope for Saturday is clarity in my memories – I want to remember the tiny details that make the day – from getting my hair done, to professing our vows, to cutting the cake. I want a prayerful, loving wedding day.

Since we’ll be on our honeymoon starting on Sunday, our good friend Fr. Matthew Rolling will blog for us next week.

Justin: I just wanted to add that I couldn’t have said it better myself. I am very excited and I love you, Sara.
