My Joy

May 15, 2014

Donna: Beware the Ides of March, and everything before and after!  If there ever was a month I was glad to see come to an end it was March.  The long cold winter ended with unexpected health issues.  Tim had a toothache off-and-on the last weekend of March that became full throttle, no holds barred – ON!  Nothing we tried could relieve, even slightly, the screaming daggers going through his head.

Pause here for dramatic effect.

Timothy: Ohhh!

Donna: I did mention that it was the weekend, yes?  And, we were in the middle of a terrible ice and snow storm.  And, the county declared a level two snow emergency, meaning stay off the roads unless you have lights and sirens on your vehicle.  So, no one, no dentist, not us, was going anywhere.

Timothy: Ohhh!

Donna: Monday morning, after several phone calls and visits to various dental professionals, the oral surgeon finally removed the. . .

Timothy: #%$&%@!

Donna: Uhhh, let me translate, “the offending tooth.”

Tim later thanked me for putting up with his moaning and groaning and for taking care of him.  I responded with “it was my pleasure.”  But, was it really a pleasure?  No, it was anything but.  I was suffering watching someone I love suffer.  But that’s what I signed up for.  We said on our wedding day “in good times and bad, in sickness and in health.”  We don’t often think of what bad times might occur once we are married, but that’s part of life.

I underwent several surgeries in our quest to have children.  Tim took care of me like I was precious china during those times.  The outcome of the surgeries didn’t result in children; however, they did produce something fruitful.

God gave us the grace to see the order He intended in this disordered world.  We embraced the opportunities we were given to serve each other.

When I said it was a pleasure to be there, perhaps I should have said it was a joy.   Joy is the fruit of being right with God and His creation.  Joy isn’t necessarily happiness.  It is a peace found regardless of circumstances.

Matrimony is just one of the sacraments we were given to experience this joy.  They help bring order to our lives as we wade through the disorder of a fallen world.

Timothy: Ahhh, that’s better.

Our good friend GK Chesterton will administer some laughing gas to end the tale of the toothache:  “Marriage is a duel to the death which no man of honour should decline.” – Manalive
